MERICS Lunch Talk with Fu King-wa
“Between censorship and commerce: the future of social media in China”
China under Xi Jinping has tightened control over traditional and digital media. Restrictions have gradually been extended from political communication and interaction to seemingly less sensitive areas, such as commercial business including even the entertainment industry. In his talk, Fu King-wa will offer fresh ideas about why and how we should investigate social media and information control in China.
Fu King-wa’s research focuses on political participation and social media in China. He will give an introduction to the project “WeChatscope” that examines communication on WeChat, Chinas biggest messenger program. This project aims to develop methods to identify and visualize censored messages in public WeChat accounts.
The discussion with Fu King-wa will be moderated by Kristin Shi-Kupfer, head of the society and media program at MERICS.
