MERICS Futures Fellow Emile Dirks is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on China’s civil society, human rights, censorship and state surveillance. He was formerly a Research Associate with the London School of Economics and Political Science, and regularly works as an independent research consultant for various organizations.
